If you’re a fan of American football, you most likely have heard the term “in the trenches”, but might not understand the meaning of this term and how much of an impact is has on the overall game. This term refers to what goes on between the offensive and defensive linemen of each team on every single play. For the more casual fan, understanding it can give you a greater respect for the intricacies of the game and for those players that are rarely in the spotlight.

Offensive Lineman

On offense, there are five lineman starting with the Center who stands in front of the Quarterback and is responsible for handing him the ball. There will be a Guard to the left and right of the Center, and then an Offensive Tackle beside each Guard.

The job of the offensive line is to collectively protect the Quarterback from the players on the opposing team’s defense. As soon as the Center hands the ball off, the defense is going to try to tackle the Quarterback before he can make a play. Without any protection, the offense is not going to have much success scoring any points.

Defensive Lineman

On defense, there are generally four lineman, although that can change depending on the defensive scheme that the team is using. In the middle, there will be two Defensive Tackles (one if the team only uses three lineman) who are usually responsible for getting around the Guards and the Center. On the outside of the line, there will be a Defensive End on each side who attempts to get around the Offensive Tackles.

Since there are usually fewer players on the defensive line than on the offensive line, a player at a different defensive position will oftentimes get involved in the trenches as well. Without a defensive line to put pressure on the Quarterback, it would be much easier for him to make a play and score more points.

The Winner

The outcome of the game is usually decided based on which team is winning the battle at the line, or “in the trenches”. In recent years, the salaries of linemen have increased for this very reason. Most teams will build from the inside-out, which means that they will make sure they have a solid offensive and defensive line before adding skilled players at other positions. If you are unable to beat the other team’s linemen, it is highly unlikely that you will be able to beat the rest of the team and will end up losing game.

By James Mouldin

The basic framework is the same between American College Football and Pro Football, and the rules generally mirror each other. Each league has the same rules for the way in which teams accumulate points, the number of players on the field, basic penalties, and overall gameplay. However, there are subtle differences between the two that set them apart and allow fans to experience a unique style from each.

Clock Management

The regulation time of the game is the same for both College and Pro Football, as well as each game separated into two halves consisting of two quarters per half. One major difference is that there is no “Two-minute warning” in College Football. A Two-minute warning is a term used in Pro Football which relates to an automatic timeout and clock stoppage with two minutes to play in each half. In College Football, the clock keeps running down when it hits the two-minute mark just the same as it would in the first and third quarters.

Another clock management difference is what happens after a team receives a “First Down”. In the Pros, the clock continues to run if the team is able to make a first down. However, in College Football, the clock will stop moving until the referee has placed the ball at its designated location on the field and blown his whistle to signal the time keeper to start the clock.

Overtime

The overtime rules are also different between the two leagues. In Pro Football, if both teams are tied at the end of regulation, a 15 minute overtime is played and the first team to score will win the game. In College Football, overtime is played in a much more unique and arguably exciting fashion.

Each team gets a chance with the ball on offense and there is no running clock. If the teams are still tied after this point, it goes to a second overtime where each team gets another chance with the ball on offense. If they are still tied, a third overtime will begin with the same structure, only this time if a team scores a touchdown, they must attempt a two-point conversion. It keeps going back and forth like this until someone ends up with more points at the end of a particular overtime period.

Rules of the Game

As mentioned, the general rules for each league are the same, but there are different variations to certain circumstances which make the games unique. Here are the most common general rule differences between College and Pro Football:

Out of Bounds — In the Pro game, a player making a catch near the sideline is considered to be in bounds only if both of his feet touch down when he has possession of the ball. In College, a player only has to keep one foot in bounds as he makes the catch for it to be considered a complete catch.

Down by Contact — In College Football, if a player with the ball falls to the ground without being touched, the play is over. However, in Pro Football, a player must be forced to the ground by a player of the opposing team in order for the play to be over. If he falls down on his own, he is allowed to get back up and continue running with the ball.

Pass Interference — If a player attempting to catch the ball is interfered with before he is able to make an attempt to catch it, a pass interference penalty is called. This is the same for both leagues, but the enforcement of the penalty is different. In the Pro game, the ball will be placed at the spot where the penalty occurred, but in College it will only be a 15 yard penalty from the original spot of the ball.

Players

The last and probably more obvious difference between the games is that Pro players are paid a salary whereas the College players are not. Once a player has graduated College or has played the required number of years removed from high school (3 years), he can choose to enter the Pro Draft where the Pro teams will select players from College to play for their team and pay them a salary.

American Football has been a pastime of American’s for over 100 years. The NFL (National Football League) is the major source of football in the United States and has been so since it merged with the AFL (American Football League) in 1966. The popularity is growing year to year, and before any newcomers can begin to enjoy the sport, they must understand the basic rules and how the game is played.

Object of the Game

There are two teams, with each team protecting one end of the field from their opponents. This area is called the “endzone” and is where a team attempts to get the ball when it is in their possession. There are 11 players from each team on the field at one time and they are separated into “offense” or “defense”.

When a team is on offense, they are given 4 attempts (commonly called “downs”) to attempt to move the ball 10 yards at a time. If they are successful, the downs will reset to 1 and they will attempt to move another 10 yards until they reach the endzone. If the defense is able to stop them from moving 10 yards after 4 attempts, then their team will now get a chance on offense.

The offense is allowed to throw or run the ball to try to move it into the endzone and it is the job of the defense to tackle the player with the ball to the ground in order to stop them from advancing.

Scoring

Similar to most major sports, the object of the game is for one team to score more points than the other team; however, in American Football there are many ways to accumulate the points that make up the final score. Here is a description of each:

Touchdown (6 points) — this occurs when a player from one team is able to cross into their opponent’s endzone with possession of the ball.

Field Goal (3 points) — if a team is unable to get into the endzone, but it close enough to be able to kick the ball between the two goal posts positioned at the back of the endzone, they may attempt to do so.

Extra Point (1 point) — after a touchdown, the scoring team is able to attempt to kick the ball between the opponent’s goal posts to add one point to their score.

2-point conversion (2 points) — after a touchdown, the scoring team can choose to try to get the ball into the endzone again instead of kicking for the extra point. If successful, they are awarded two points.

Safety (2 points) — if an offensive player is tackled into their own endzone by the other’s team’s defense, then the opposing team will be awarded two points and are then given possession of the ball.

Length of Game

The game lasts for 60 minutes and is separated into 2 halves of 30 minutes each. Each half is broken into 2 quarters of 15 minutes each. Each team is awarded 3 timeouts per half which allows them to stop the clock from moving and to give their player’s a rest.

If a team does not use all of their timeouts in the first half, they do not carry over into the second half. If the score is tied at the end of the game, then there will be an overtime period consisting of 15 minutes. The the first team to score any points in overtime will win the game. If nobody scores during this period, the game will be called a tie.

There are many more details which make up the game of American Football, but the above basic rules will be enough to get you started to enjoy and understand the game. Now all you need to do is pick a favorite team and cheer them on!

When we think of gym wear or sports clothing, we usually picture either tight-fitting clothes made from spandex or nylon, or loose shorts and tops typical of what some people usually use when working out on the gym. Thankfully for those who want to still look fashionable even when working out, there are now a lot of options from various brands who have upped the ante of sports and active clothing. Sportswear brands have gone in on the bandwagon, working with stellar designers such as Stella McCartney and Jeremy Scott, these collaborations offer a wider range of chic sportswear for sartorially conscious gym goers.

The look “sporty” has expanded from being just a simple gym staple to an emerging trend especially among young people who have taken this look into a mix of street style sensibilities. Things that were usually used in gyms such as sports jackets and sports bags have become coveted items for fashionistas as well.

They have become part of acceptable everyday wear, evident of this fact are the number of celebrities and other high-profile personalities being pictured by the paparazzi running errands, going out for a coffee run or playing with their kids in comfy gym wear, a welcome departure from their glamorous red-carpet looks.

The key is to mix and match pieces which work well together for your overall look. Just like any other thing in fashion, styles and trends come and go so it is important to keep up with the times. This is increasingly becoming evident as sports personalities have become such as the Williams sisters Venus and Serena, David Beckham and Christiano Ronaldo have been signed on by major sportswear and fashion brands to become endorsers.

Despite the increasing styles of major sportswear brands, the clothes should still be comfortable to move around in as this is what the pur

They should be easy to care for, washable, and can withstand the wear, tear and stress associated with constant physical movement. Choose clothes that are breathable and does not let sweat stick on your skin, so you can do your workouts more comfortably with less distractions. Follow the washing and drying instructions on the label as some sports clothing are made of material that may shrink or expand when washed with hot or cold water.

Always remember that though it may be tempting to wear comfortable sports clothing everywhere, there are still some places where they may not be appropriate. If you have a casual dress code in the office, be sure to mix sporty with more polished pieces so that you still look professional without looking like you just got out of or are on your way to going to the gym.

Getting a vehicle, even if it’s not brand new, entails a considerable amount of investment. It’s not a cheap asset and one has to exercise due diligence in finding a unit that is worth his money. There are several ways of getting affordable vehicles. You can opt for second-hand units especially if the owner is a motivated seller.

Many vehicle owners sell their cars because they have an urgent need for cash. They can part with their cars at a very low price in exchange for an immediate cash payment. You can also check out car auctions Brisbane. However, don’t get tempted to purchase the first car that seems like a good deal. You have to physically check its condition for possible damaged parts. You can also bring an expert auto mechanic so they can check the actual condition of the vehicle. Be sure to also ask for a copy of the vehicle’s documents so you can do your own verification from proper agencies.

It is fascinating to imagine the journey that dating has taken, through the ages. From dragging a cavewoman around by the hair to the ever expanding world of online dating.

The relationship differences are vast and changing rapidly in differences. Online dating is now moving further afield into more and more social platforms, such as Facebook, Badoo and even LinkedIn (for professionals). The worrying part of all this is how face to face communication has almost been removed from the initial relationship equation and been replaced to the always-on, electronic equivalent of both email and online messaging, to make those initial hook-ups with a potential partner.

Does this mean we are becoming further removed from a connected relationship? Is it a fundamental breakdown in how human beings should communicate? Or are we just moving with the times? Several leading researchers suggest Facebook will lead the charge in online dating as well as how we behave in our relationships.

American Football is one of the most physical types of sports that a person can play today. Therefore if you want o avoid the risk of injury when playing this game it is important that you wear the right sort of protective gear. Certainly one of the most important items of clothing that a player should be wearing when playing this sport is pads. But with so many different kinds of pads to select from how can you determine which are the right ones for you.

In this article we take a brief look at some of the things that need to be considered and which will as a result help you to decide which pads to buy when you play American Football. But first let us take a look at just what the pads look like that are worn when playing this game.

The pads are made from several layers with the one closest to the body not only providing cushioning but also being able to absorb shock. Whereas the outer layer is made from tough plastic and are placed across the shoulders to guard them from any potential injury. Also attached to the ones covering the shoulders by straps there is another set of pads that are used to cover the rib and chest area. Again providing ample protection to avoid the risk of any serious harm being caused to the players as they tackle each other during a game. Also to ensure that the pads feel comfortable when worn players will have foam rubber placed underneath them.

So what reasons are there for wearing these pads during a game?

Reason 1 – When players clash during a game of American Football a lot of force will be employed by them to prevent their opponents from reaching their goal. By wearing the pads a player will find that they help to disburse the shock caused by the impact over a great area and so of course a lot less pressure is being placed on the area where impact occurred.

Reason 2 - Although most of the force of the impact can be distributed sometimes it cannot be done so. The design of these pads is such that they are then able to soak up the rest of the force of the impact through deformation. What this means is that the shoulder pads are strung with tight webbing and it is this which helps to deform the impact felt.

hether it be touch football, tag football, powderpuff football or standard American football, chances are that at some point you will be invited to partake in the game. Don’t know how to throw a football? Tried once, but threw too short? Have no fear! This article will tell you everything you need to know to throw like the pros!

Form is very important in the art of football throwing. From the second you bring the ball tight into your body to the full arm extension of your follow-through, each movement you make effects were and how your ball will move.

However the ball gets to you, first align it properly in your hands. Your middle finger should be at end of the laces with your index finger hovering somewhere around the middle. Next you bend the ball into your body. Be sure to bend your elbows in close to your sides at 90-degree angles before the throw. Your hands need to be at the proper angle to ensure that the ball goes straight (without wobbling) to the proper person at the right height. Your fingers should be run along the lace of the football as previously described and roll off when releasing the ball.

Your arm strength is probably not sufficient to get the ball across the field. The pros don’t rely on it, neither should you. Use your hips and shoulders, putting your body behind the throw for more speed and strength. Nearing the end of your extension, snap your wrist to get a spiral in your pass. And remember: follow through! The minute changes made as the ball leaves your hand absolutely affect where the ball goes and the speed at which it moves. A proper follow-through ensures that the football will continue on to be a touchdown.
